BANGI, 4 Nov - Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was overjoyed by the recent SUKEM Squash Tournament, which brought students from all 3 campuses together for an exciting game and Kolej Keris Mas (KKM) and Kolej Tun Dr Ismail (KTDI) were champions in the women's and men's singles.

The National University Malaysia Sports Tournament (SUKEM) is an annual platform organized by the university to hone student’s sporting talents through various competitions, either individually or in groups. The SUKEM Squash Championships showcase the skill of our squash community which promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and the excitement of competition.

KKM performed well in the women's singles competition. In the final game, our top women player Ong Wei Chin (21), year 3 student from Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities won the tournament with the score of 3-0 in the grand finale.

“Consistency is the key for you to success, if you train very consistently the chances of you winning the competition is higher,” said Ong.

Alongside that, the top player from KTDI, Chew Yu Xiang (21), year 3 from the Faculty of Medicine defeated his opponent with a score of 3-0, in the men's singles competition.

“For this tournament, I trained at least 1 time a week for 2-3 hours, did some footwork training and I will still be competing for the upcoming tournament because I like squash so much,” said Chew.

These players displayed abilities and endurance, making the contest a great squash entertainment. However, following intense competition, both players from KKM and KTDI faced some challenges along the way which resulted in injury. According to them, Ong and Chew faced injuries during their squash careers, highlighting the physical demands of this sport.

“Around 4 to 5 months ago, I was injured in the back and in extreme pain, so I have to take a break from Squash for 3 months,” said Chew.

“I was once injured at my hamstring and that was the toughest time during my squash career,” said Ong.

Ong Wei Chin and Chew Yu Xiang add glory to their campuses and bring home not only their gold-plated trophies but also bring glory to their college which is KKM and KTDI within the university college community in the SUKEM Squash Tournament 2023. The victories from both players which represent their college provide a breathtaking performance display of squash

entertainment.
