In a resolute stance against corruption, the Angkatan Mahasiswa Anti Rasuah (AMAR) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam orchestrated a 5km running event on December 16, 2023. The vibrant opening ceremony set the tone for the day, with organizers and participants

Zaid Azraq, the program director and a 3rd-semester student of UiTM’s Faculty of Law, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the event. He noted that the 5km run was designed not only to promote physical well-being but also to convey a strong message against corruption. In recent times, Malaysia has been grappling with persistent challenges related to corruption. While the country has made significant strides in addressing corruption through the establishment of institutions like the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), instances of corrupt practices continue to pose a concern.

Corruption in Malaysia is often associated with issues such as bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power. High-profile cases have brought attention to the need for sustained efforts to combat corruption at various levels of society, including within educational institutions. Against this backdrop, the emergence of student-led initiatives like Angkatan Mahasiswa Anti Rasuah (AMAR) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam becomes particularly significant. AMAR's proactive stance against corruption within the university community reflects a growing awareness among the youth about the importance of combating this societal ill.

As a response to the broader context of corruption in Malaysia, AMAR's activities, such as the recently organized 5km running event, serve as a localized yet impactful effort to foster a culture of integrity. By engaging students in the fight against corruption, AMAR is contributing to the larger anti-corruption narrative in Malaysia.

The collaboration with the Integrity Unit of UiTM and the Integrity and Governance Unit of UiTM Holdings Sdn. Bhd. during the 5km run underscores the university's commitment to instilling ethical values among its student body. Such initiatives not only raise awareness about the detrimental effects of corruption but also empower students to actively participate in creating a more transparent and ethical society.

Student-led initiatives like AMAR's 5km running event exemplify the potential for positive

change that lies within university communities. Beyond academic pursuits, students are proving that they can be catalysts for societal transformation. The event showcased that students are not passive recipients of education; they are active agents of change, capable of addressing real-world issues.

The initiative also highlighted the importance of integrating values like integrity and

transparency into the education system. It's not just about imparting knowledge but also about instilling a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct in students. AMAR's commitment to fighting corruption within the university community sets a precedent for other student organizations, demonstrating that they too can contribute meaningfully to societal well-being.

As the global community observes International Anti-Corruption Day, UiTM Shah Alam's

AMAR has set a commendable example of proactive engagement in the fight against corruption. The 5km running event became a symbol of hope, unity, and commitment to a more transparent and ethical future. It serves as a reminder that small acts, when fueled by passion and purpose, can lead to significant and lasting change. In the footsteps of AMAR, other student organizations and communities can take inspiration and continue to stride boldly against the pervasive issue of corruption.
